The Spiral of Healing

Why You Aren't "Back at the Beginning" When Old Patterns Reappear

By Lisa Giebelhaus, LPC 6 min read

A common fear I hear in therapy is:

"I thought I dealt with this already—why is it coming up again?"

Maybe it's:

  • a familiar abandonment trigger,
  • perfectionism you swore you outgrew,
  • a relationship pattern you promised yourself you'd never repeat,
  • or anxiety that returns after months of calm.

It's easy to think you've failed.

You haven't.

Healing is not linear. It is a spiral.

Why Issues Resurface

Imagine walking up a spiral staircase. You pass the same coordinate again and again—but always at a higher altitude.

You aren't back at the beginning. You're encountering the same material with:

  • more maturity,
  • more self-awareness,
  • more emotional capacity,
  • and more tools.

Repetition isn't evidence of failure. It's evidence that your system is giving you a new chance to practice.

Your Brain Is Relearning Safety

When old triggers flare, it often means:

  • you've hit a deeper layer of healing,
  • a developmental wound is ready to be integrated,
  • your nervous system is testing a new level of resilience,
  • or life stressors have activated an older coping pattern.

None of this is regression. It's integration.

Therapy as a Laboratory

Therapy isn't about eliminating every struggle from your life. That's not realistic—and it's not how humans grow.

Therapy is a laboratory:

  • a place to examine patterns,
  • test new reactions,
  • strengthen the ego,
  • build emotional muscle memory,
  • and develop an internal voice that can meet difficulty with steadiness.

Signs You're Actually Healing (Even If You Don't Feel Like It)

You:

  • recognize the trigger faster
  • feel it without being hijacked
  • recover more quickly
  • respond with more self-compassion
  • see new choices instead of defaulting to old ones

That's progress.

That's movement up the spiral.

You Will Continue to Meet Your "Thing"—Just Differently

Your themes won't disappear forever. But you won't meet them with fear.

You'll meet them with clarity, steadiness, and a self that no longer breaks under their weight.

That's what healing looks like.
