Understanding Insomnia
Getting a good night's sleep can have a big impact on how we feel and function during the day. When you're struggling to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake up earlier than you would like, it can leave you feeling tired, frustrated, and concerned about whether you'll be able to sleep the next night.
Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that involves ongoing difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting back to sleep after waking during the night. For some people, sleep difficulties may begin during a stressful or challenging time. For others, problems with sleep can continue even after the original source of stress has passed.
When sleep problems persist, they can begin to affect many areas of life. You may notice that you have less energy, difficulty concentrating, feel more irritable or emotionally overwhelmed, or find it harder to enjoy the things you normally do. You may also begin to worry about sleep itself. Unfortunately, the more pressure we put on ourselves to sleep, the more alert and frustrated we can become—making sleep even more difficult.
Common Symptoms of Insomnia
Insomnia can look different from person to person. Common symptoms include:
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Waking during the night and having trouble falling back asleep
- Waking earlier than desired
- Feeling tired or having low energy or unrefreshed during the day
- Difficulty concentrating or staying focused
- Increased irritability or emotional distress
- Worrying about sleep or feeling anxious about bedtime
- Feeling that sleep has become a source of frustration or stress
What Can Contribute to Insomnia?
There is rarely just one reason someone develops insomnia. Sleep can be affected by stress, anxiety, changes in routine, major life events, sleep habits, medications, medical conditions, and other emotional or physical factors.
Sometimes a period of stress can temporarily disrupt sleep. However, after several difficult nights, certain thoughts, behaviors, and patterns around sleep can unintentionally keep the problem going. For example, spending a great deal of time worrying about whether you will sleep, watching the clock, or feeling pressure to "make" yourself fall asleep can increase frustration and alertness at bedtime.
Understanding what may be contributing to your sleep difficulties is an important first step toward making positive changes.
You Don't Have to Keep Struggling With Sleep
The good news is that insomnia is treatable, and you do not have to simply accept poor sleep as a permanent part of your life.
Our therapists can help you understand the factors contributing to your sleep difficulties and work with you to develop strategies that support healthier sleep. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is an evidence-based treatment specifically designed to address insomnia and is recommended as a first-line treatment for chronic insomnia.
With the right support, many people are able to improve their sleep and regain confidence in their ability to rest. Better sleep can make a meaningful difference in your energy, concentration, mood, relationships, and overall quality of life.
