Depression Evaluation for Adults Near Atlanta

Structured clinical assessment with Dr. Alex Crenshaw at Peachtree Psychology's Roswell office — to identify what's driving your symptoms and what treatment fits.

Depression doesn't always look like sadness. It can look like exhaustion. Irritability. Numbness. Difficulty caring about things you used to care about. Going through the motions while feeling increasingly disconnected from your own life.

It can also look like anxiety, or like ADHD, or like the kind of low-grade flatness that people learn to call their personality rather than a condition.

Depression is one of the most common and most treatable psychological conditions — but it's also one of the most misunderstood. It's not one thing. It exists on a spectrum, takes many forms, and frequently overlaps with other conditions that require their own targeted treatment. Getting better starts with understanding what you're actually dealing with.

Dr. Alex Crenshaw offers depression evaluations for adults at Peachtree Psychology's Roswell office. These are structured clinical assessments designed to identify what's driving your symptoms, rule out overlapping conditions, and give you a clear treatment direction. Depression Isn't Always What People Expect

The clinical picture of depression is broader than most people realize. In adults, depression commonly presents as:

Persistent low energy or fatigue that doesn't resolve with rest
Loss of interest in things that used to feel meaningful — hobbies, relationships, work
Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or following through on things
Emotional numbness or a sense of going through the motions
Irritability, restlessness, or a short fuse that feels out of character
Changes in sleep — too much, too little, or waking in the early hours unable to return to sleep
A quiet, persistent sense that things aren't going to get better

Many adults have carried these symptoms for years — sometimes decades — without ever receiving a formal evaluation or an accurate diagnosis. They've been in therapy, tried medication, read the books. Something still isn't working. Often, the missing piece is diagnostic clarity.

Why an Evaluation Changes the Treatment Picture

Depression is not a single condition with a single treatment. A formal evaluation examines what type of depression is present, what's maintaining it, and what's likely to actually help.

Major Depressive Disorder has specific evidence-based protocols including Behavioral Activation, CBT, and medication. Persistent Depressive Disorder (dysthymia) — a lower-grade, chronic form — often requires a different approach and is frequently undertreated because it looks like personality rather than illness. Depression with significant anxiety requires a sequenced treatment approach. Bipolar depression is commonly misdiagnosed as unipolar depression, and treating it with standard antidepressants without mood stabilization can destabilize rather than help.

Beyond type, depression frequently co-occurs with anxiety, ADHD, trauma, and OCD — and each of those overlapping conditions affects how depression should be treated. A formal evaluation examines the full picture, not just the presenting complaint. When anxiety is a primary concern, see our Anxiety Assessment page.

What the Depression Evaluation Includes

Depression evaluations use the Standalone Diagnostic Evaluation process, focused on identifying the specific type and presentation of depression, ruling out overlapping conditions, and determining the most effective treatment path.

Investment

$700

1

Initial phone screening to review your concerns and confirm this evaluation is the right fit

2

Brief screening survey, when appropriate, completed before your appointment

3

60-minute clinical interview covering your symptoms, history, and how depression is affecting your daily life — energy, motivation, relationships, sleep, and functioning

4

60-minute feedback session reviewing findings and treatment recommendations

5

Written clinical report documenting the evaluation, diagnosis, and specific next steps

The interview examines the full clinical picture — including mood history, anxiety symptoms, trauma history, attention and concentration difficulties, and any prior treatment history — so the recommendations are built on an accurate foundation, not just a checklist.

This evaluation is offered on a self-pay basis. A superbill is available upon request for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

What You'll Walk Away With

A written clinical report with a clear diagnostic picture and specific treatment recommendations. Not a general recommendation to pursue therapy, but a concrete direction — what type of therapy, targeting what specifically, and whether a medication consultation is indicated.

The 60-minute feedback session gives you space to understand the findings, ask questions, and leave with a plan you can actually act on.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if what I'm experiencing is depression or just burnout?

They can look very similar — fatigue, reduced motivation, emotional flatness, difficulty engaging. The clinical distinction matters because they're maintained differently and respond to different interventions. A formal evaluation is the most reliable way to understand which you're dealing with, and whether both are present.

Can depression and anxiety be evaluated at the same time?

Yes, and this is common. Depression and anxiety frequently co-occur, and the evaluation examines both. The written report will address all significant findings and make recommendations for how treatment should be sequenced.

I've been in therapy for depression before and didn't get better. Does that mean I don't have depression?

Not necessarily. It may mean the type of depression wasn't accurately identified, the treatment wasn't well-matched to your presentation, or a co-occurring condition was missed. A fresh evaluation with a thorough diagnostic process can clarify what previous treatment may have overlooked.

Is this evaluation appropriate if I'm currently on medication for depression?

Yes. A clinical evaluation can complement — and often inform — your medication management. The written report can be shared with your prescriber to support more targeted treatment decisions.

Does insurance cover this?

This evaluation is self-pay. A superbill is available for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Contact your insurance provider to ask about out-of-network psychological testing benefits.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is required. You can contact Peachtree Psychology directly to schedule an initial phone screening.

Are you currently accepting new clients?

Yes. Dr. Crenshaw is currently accepting new clients at the Roswell office.
