ARFID therapy

ARFID Therapy in Atlanta

Specialized support for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder. Gentle, individualized approaches to expand food flexibility and reduce mealtime distress.

Understanding ARFID

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is an eating disorder characterized by extremely limited food intake or food avoidance that leads to nutritional deficiencies, weight loss, or impaired functioning. Unlike other eating disorders, ARFID is not driven by body image concerns or fear of weight gain.

ARFID typically involves one or more of these patterns: sensory sensitivity (extreme reactions to food textures, smells, or tastes), fear of aversive consequences (like choking or vomiting), or lack of interest in eating. People with ARFID often have a very restricted list of "safe foods" and experience significant anxiety around trying new foods.

This condition can develop in childhood and persist into adulthood, affecting social situations, relationships, and overall quality of life. ARFID is more common in individuals with autism, ADHD, or anxiety disorders, though anyone can develop it.
